Here are now a couple of shots from Brkini area more to the SW than the photos in the previous post around Cebulovica and Razdrto. Brkini lies between 500 and 820m ASL where the black ice was the most intense in the layer between 600m towards the top of Brkini. This layer between 600 and 900m ASL is usually the most critical for freezing rain and Brkini area experienced the most intense black ice events several times in the past already. They are located exactly in this layer and in such situations that occured this time, deep accumulations of black ice can result. As can be seen from the Ljubljana skew-t diagram from 9th Jan morning, the lowest temperatures were exactly in this critical layer:

Anyway, here are a couple of photos I’ve taken in the Artvize area which lie atop of northern Brkini at about 820m ASL. There, black ice accumulations up to 5cm were observed. Numerous trees were broken, but thankfully no strong winds were coming after the intense freezing rain that day, so Brkini avoided a big disaster. Damage would have been much worse in that case.
