My name is Marko Korosec, I was born and raised in a small village Zirje in SW Slovenia. I graduated high school here and continued with my studies at the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics. Since my early age, I am interested in weather and photography. During my primary school classes I've already had weather instruments to observe weather and so it all began to rise. Later on I purchased an automatic weather station to get more weather data and observations of my local area - named Karst. Through several years of mesurements and daily observations I managed to collect many interesting data about southwestern Slovenia and Karst climatology.

Anyways, my interests have been rising since then and I found the most exciting moments in extreme weather such as severe winter storms, severe storms during summer, extensive rainfalls during spring and so here I am nowadays, deeply in studying severe weather events, researching them through forecasting, analysing and chasing such events. My main research areas of interest are mostly concentrated on research of mesoscale and convective dynamics, especially on severe storms with the forecasting initiation with triggering mechanism for deep moist convection on pre-existing airmass boundaries (e.g. drylines or other near-surface convergence boundaries) and the effect of rear-flank downdraft's forcing on tornadogenesis in the supercell thunderstorms. Besides researching severe weather I am also storm chasing or better said chasing the all kinds of extreme weather events while I am also enjoying taking nature and weather photographs everytime I am out there observing weather phenomena and its majestys. Storm chasing became a part of my life and I enjoy to learn something new everytime I am out on the fields. As in many other hobbies or works, hundreds of hours dedicated to chasing and collecting experiences is the key for success which goes hand in hand with understanding physical background of the storms, high-end experiences in weather forecasting and storm structure analysis, driving, etc.

I purchased my first photo camera back in year 1998. I started directly with SLR camera, it was a Canon EOS 500N, 35mm slide film camera. Since then I am shooting images with Canon cameras. I jumped into the digital world of cameras back in 2002 when I got digital camera Canon PowerShot A60, while I got more seriously envolved into DSLR cameras in spring 2005 when I purchased a Canon EOS 300D DSLR. Since then I had no reason to shot on a slide films anymore, though it has to be said that I learned quite a lot on classic 35mm slide film camera. But with the digital nature of SLR cameras, it was like a changing world. Shooting hundreds of photos with not being worried if I took too much of them, as shots are free. Two years later I wanted more and so I did purchase a new DSLR camera, a semi-professional camera Canon EOS 30D DIGITAL. I also own few lenses, currently I have Canon 75-300m, Canon 28-80mm, Sigma 10-20mm and Sigma 17-35mm. Right after I got Canon EOS 30D, I started shooting in RAW format and even it was a hard one at the beginning, I would never go back shooting in JPEG or anything else, RAW format just gives you the open space in post-processing photographs and you can do whatever you want with them. Just awhile ago, in early spring 2009, I purchased a new camera, a professional Canon EOS 5D mark II DIGITAL camera. Finally I am back to fullframe camera with 35mm sensor and no crop factor at all. I am self-taught photographer since my first click on the camera's trigger with a strong passion for creating photographs with all the dramatic moments and feelings experienced while chasing. Sharing my photographs with the world was the reason to create an online website which you're browsing right now. Website Weather-Photos.net shares a photo gallery, a blog, detailed chasing logs with weather analysis, cloud atlas and much more. Please, enjoy your stay!

Since 2005 I am employed as a supervisor of Road Weather Information System (RWIS) at Slovenian main motorway company DARS. The system is used to monitor weather conditions on the motorways through whole Slovenian road network with the main focus on optimization of winter maintenance (called MDSS - Maintenance Decision Support System) which is the most important to prevent road blocks and traffic jams with the daily moving international transport in the winter period. The Slovenian motorway company's RWIS system holds more than 50 road weather stations from different world's professional meteorological equipment providers such as VAISALA and BOSCHUNG. Both of these two companies are the world's top RWIS system equipment companies.

In late 2006 I began with the project of rainfall measurements across southwestern Slovenia along main mountain barriers which is multi-annual project with an investigation of a precipitation regime of south-west Slovenia and its properties during the different precipitation events through the entire year. The main focus of research in this project is to figure out how a variety of events (e.g. Genoa low, northern Mediterranean cut-off low, classic SW flow, etc) affect on the hydrological regime of the south-west Slovenian ground waters network and furthermore into flooding events. With my faculty colleague we created a network of more than 10 rain gauges to collect monthly rainfall data while special and extreme events are monitored closely and obsservations are made more often.

During the summer of 2007 I joined the European project called ESTOFEX - The European Storm Forecast Experiment which is an initiative of a team of European meteorologists, meteorology students and trained enthusiasts, who intend to learn how to forecast severe convective storms in Europe. The main goals of ESTOFEX projects are daily issueing forecasts of severe convective weather in Europe, an enhance of understanding severe storms and to promote collection of extreme weather events into the European Severe Weather Database (ESWD). I have become an official forecaster for ESTOFEX during August 2009, so since then one will be able to see my name under some issued forecasts, depends on the scheadule. More about this project can be found on the official website of ESTOFEX project.

Later in 2007 I also started a project SKYWARN Slovenia which is, in the first step, a database collection of extreme severe weather events such as large hail, severe wind gusts, extensive rainfalls, tornadoes, etc., for the Slovenian territory. Such database actually does not exist in our country or our national collection is pretty poor with data so this project is a big open opportunity to build a climatology of extreme events across Slovenia. Furthermore, this project will be upgraded and in partnership with an Environmental Agency of the Republic of Slovenia (EARS) and Administration of the Republic of Slovenia for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief (ACPDR) regarding protection against natural and other disasters such as extreme weather events.

In the last years I have attended on several European conferences with scientific papers and talks regarding severe weather with photography and road weather information systems. My photographs have been published in many magazines, books and other papers. More details about my publications, talks and other contributions can be found below. With my passion of storm chasing, I have been chasing since year 2000, first mostly in the Slovenian territory which I extended outside the borders in the last years, especially over the Po valley in northern Italy and western half of Pannonia plains which both have great plain terrain and are often under favorable conditions for severe storms. I have also been chasing severe storms in the Tornado Alley (USA) since spring 2006, where I spent whole May on the Plains each year and observed some of the most powerful storms with spectacular structures, hail and tornadoes across Tornado Alley. A website InflowJet.net has been launched for this purpose which is dedicated to US severe weather, throughout weather forecasting, case studies, research and storm chasing. In my several years long chasing career I have experienced hundreds of spectacular storms with all accompanied phenomena like very large hail (tennis ball size) and tornadoes (almost 20 of them), extreme winds (180-200km/h Bora winds), snowfalls, etc. The most memorable events are likely three; first one would be without a doubt a tornadofest with 7 tornadoes on May 22nd 2008 in Kansas, then the second one would be a massive structured nighttime supercell with insane hail chasing me in central Friuli region on August 16th 2006 and the third one would be an incredible midnight supercell with photogenic tornado over water in Trieste gulf on August 8th 2008 which hit me on the coast with severe wind gusts exceeding 150km/h.
